A small house refuses to be banal. three levels play slightly different geometrical games. its spaces are assembled out of small gestures: sloping ceilings, curved and staggered walls, episodic double heights, and lofty chimneys. The ground floor accommodates the main living space open to the garden, concealing the circulation and secondary spaces behind a subtle wall. The middle level is organized around a central hallway from which a spiral staircase takes one to the attic. The house is a collection of episodes and compelling fragments. The historical Villa Bianca, designed by architect Jan Kotěra in 1910-11, underwent numerous modifications since its construction. The latest was a radical renovation completed in 2003 according to the project by Dutch architect Erick van Egeraat. The exterior of the villa was restored to a form inspired by Jan Kotěra's original design, but the interior, in contrast to the historical exterior, reflected the turn-of-the-millennium period. No elements from the original era were preserved, except for replicas of mullioned windows in the apartment’s interior, that reminded one of being in an early 20th-century modernist villa.

Vanderbilt is a project in a building designed by COOKFOX. According to COOKFOX it was “Designed to pull in nature at all scales for the health and well-being of its residents”

We also wanted the space to feel a little dreamy and utopian. For this we kept things very soft and neutral, allowing the artworks and greenery to command viewing.

The design was kept more minimal to allow the user/viewer to spend time with each unique piece while the use of curves carry you gently through the space.

A small inhabited space with an old, somewhat decadent building on the outskirts of the city, in a medium-populated residential area, has been completely transformed to become the new home of a very young couple. The project consisted in the demolition of the previous house and the construction of a new highly energy efficient residential building, characterized by large and bright internal spaces, especially in the living area.

At a design level, the various constraints given by the specific position of the previous building together with the south and west views characterized by proximity to neighborhood, made the process to arrive at the definitive solution very long and difficult.

A continuous contrast between dark and light: the beauty of one is defined by the absence of the other. The interior design of this house was commissioned by a professional couple, an instrumentalist and an expert in Italian artisanal perfumes. Their working experiences share an instinctive propensity for experimentation that they want to express it at home as well: a space with bold tones that reflects their lifestyle without compromises.

The project takes inspiration from the interiors of a historic Milanese nightclub of the 1970s, where the unconventional use of steel sheets was an innovation for the time. The effect of this material convinced the clients from the beginning, both for its reference to the musical panorama and for its ability to manifest itself with shades of very varied colors and shapes.

This refurbishment of a 1910's two-bedroom cottage included a rework of the kitchen and bathroom and the reinstatement of Arts and Crafts details to the original house. For the interior the contemporary interventions are rich in colour and materiality, referencing a palette of heritage hues.

Externally, the new garden provides a verdant backdrop to the living space with plants creating privacy from neighbouring properties. A borrowed landscape of mature gum trees is drawn into the compact garden from the park beyond.

This small project was undertaken over a period of a number years. Firstly a new garden was planted in the rear yard, which has now matured into a lush green oasis and provides a backdrop to the new interiors. The existing bathroom was refurbished with traditional tessellated floor tiles in a strong geometric patter and walls lined to a datum in bevelled white tiles. Contemporary fittings are used as a contrast to the more traditional finishes.

The task of a family with children was to create a recreational facility for spending leisure time in both summer and winter, providing space for gatherings among extended family and friends. The building was supposed to blend into the landscape and respect local architecture, while also giving a modern impression and meeting the needs of contemporary living.

The cottage was built on the western slope of the Pomezní hřeben in the Krkonoše Mountains. The surrounding terrain is sloping, descending quite steeply into the valley, and the land is situated at an altitude of approximately 1000 meters above sea level. The building is located within the territory of the Krkonoše National Park, surrounded by untouched nature without any fences or barriers. On the northern side, the land adjoins a forest. Set adjacent to a National Park in Thirroul, this forever home occupied by a young family presented a challenge with its dysfunctional spaces and dominating roofline. The clients' wish was to renovate an apartment with an area of 172 m2 so that family members and guests would have privacy, and enough space for work, rest, and storage. The remodelling was supposed to be moderate, respectful, timeless in aesthetics, delicate, and minimalist.

The apartment is located in a late Secession building in Prague, but the original interior was surprisingly not decorative. There is a distinctive interior element, the paneling in the bay windows. As part of the remodelling, it was essential for us to make the original valuable elements stand out and sensitively supplement them with new ones. This was also reflected in the layout solution.

We straightened the double doors to the rooms on one axis to create an enfilade of four rooms. The new layout creates its residents' own private worlds at the corners of the floor plan, and common spaces are the heart of the apartment at its center. The great advantage of thinking more freely about the individual zones is undoubtedly the reinforced concrete skeleton, which allows the rooms to be connected more easily. The layout modification was only minimal from a construction point of view, but thanks to it the bedroom has its own bathroom niche hidden behind sliding glass. In the vestibule it was simply a matter of moving a part of the wall to create a walk-through wardrobe. Probably the most significant intervention was the connection of the two main rooms, the kitchen and the living room, which are situated facing the street. Upon entering the apartment in the vestibule, there is a built-in wardrobe with oak veneer panelling, which matches the colour and finish of the frames of the original folding doors, which were refurbished. Very close to Retiro Park, we have transformed a 200-square-meter apartment into a visual "trompe l'oeil" where everything can be hidden or revealed thanks to a lattice screens, folding screens, and a completely custom-designed layout. Paneled walls, folding screens, and sliding doors equally define the aesthetics and layout, with pieces designed by them completing the promised timeless look. We demolished all the walls of the original dwelling and decided to create a central interior cube from which the rest of the rooms stem. In this windowless space, we placed the bathrooms, storage, a small wine cellar, and two sliding doors providing access to the living-dining-kitchen area, an office, and the three bedrooms, one of them being en suite. The house's leitmotif is its spiral staircase, located in the core of the layout, connecting the house vertically. Main feature of this project is to basically live this place as an office or free space being in between cars and oil barrels. No privacy needed so all materials are transparent or translucent.

An old warehouse turned into a studio/garage for a car’s collector.

The goal was to preserve and reveal the historical origins of the house. The apartment is dominated by the main living space, a salon with a carved wooden Renaissance ceiling. The existing apartment, measuring 85 sqm, is the result of the division into two a large apartment with two opposed façades to Enric Granados Street and a generous interior courtyard in the Ensanche Derecho of Barcelona. Located on Severiano Ballesteros Street in Santander, Spain, the restaurant was conceived as part of an architectural complex that also includes an Oceanographic Center designed by Vicente Roig Forner and Ángel Hernández Morales, built between 1975 and 1978.

The original building consists of two square bodies connected by a canopy, with a concrete structure. The interior is distributed over three floors around a central courtyard covered by a vault of paraboloid membranes. In 2003, a renovation and extension was carried out which included the extension of the west façade and the roof of the terrace with a pyramidal aluminum structure, thus altering the initial conception of the building.

The project provides the museum with a new space on the second floor to house its restaurant and terrace. To accomplish this, the project involved the creation of a new volume that provides a solution to the pathologies present in the roof and façade of the building.

Amidst the COVID-19 pandemic, the owners purchased this former multi-family dwelling without ever setting foot inside. A dilapidated structure, yet with a charming facade; envisioning a complete renovation meant the building could be tailored entirely to their preferences.

Location was also a non-issue: a southeast-facing urban garden with a view of a church, a walking park, and two beautiful old beech trees meant no concerns about rear neighbors.

The two outdated apartments were transformed into a single-family home, crowned with an additional floor during the renovation. This not only harmonized with the streetscape but also provided the opportunity to optimize all spaces for long-term occupancy.

Iron Rain - This time, I want to bring back the heavy rain. We used 500 white aluminum plates of three different widths (160, 320, and 480) to create a randomized pattern based on my sketches, and simulated a downpour on the facade. The plates were perforated with randomly generated dots and dashes in Morse code, forming a message that awaits deciphering. To achieve the thickness of a real downpour, the aluminum plates were designed with three layers, cascading like a waterfall, and the outermost layer hides a canopy that maintains functionality while preserving visual integrity. Upon entering the lobby through the rain, the downpour continues. I also designed the steel bookshelves in the shape of raindrops, extending the visual vocabulary from the facade to the interior, creating a sense of continuity. Due to its exceptional location at the tri-border region of France, Switzerland and Germany, the city of Neuenburg am Rhein has always been of special importance. As part of the State Garden Exhibition 2022, the town had the opportunity to reorganize urban areas. The site known as "Am Kronenrain", located between the city center and the redesigned green space "Stadtpark am Wuhrloch", played a significant role in this endeavor. The preliminary urban situation proved to be dissatisfactory with hardly any usable space and a height difference of around nine meters. The structure was built to consolidate three functions inside three conjoined buildings—the filtering, panning, and finishing of sugar—that required the use of enormous equipment housed in cavernous, multistory spaces purposefully obscured by the repetitive punched arch windows in the masonry. Although these windows were misaligned across the four facades, together they give the entire structure a singular, monumental appearance, crowned by the muscular smokestack on the west elevation built out of radial brick.

Julius is a small specialty coffee shop in the center of Almaty. The client for the project is ABR Group, which is well known in Kazakhstan for paying great attention to interior design in their projects. The starting point for the Julius Cafe interior concept was a red La Marzocco coffee machine, which the client had purchased long before the project began. We thought building a coffee shop interior was symbolic of the coffee machine. A two-family home in a quiet residential area of Tokyo. With other houses and apartment buildings pressing around the site, the architectural volume was pushed to the north to take in daylight, ventilation, and greenery of the yard into the living environment by a large glass front southern façade.

The layout plan made it possible to preserve the existing persimmon tree beloved by the previous generations. Considering the potential difficulties of going up and down the stairs, the rooms for the older couple were arranged on the 1st floor. The eight cats living with the older couple roam in and outdoors more freely, and encourages the mother to enjoy her hobby of gardening more freely.

The younger couple and their child reside on the 2nd and 3rd floors. To avoid the two households being completely separated at the top and bottom, a “stairway-like” structure was designed in the south yard, continuing upward into the building and penetrating the 1st through 3rd floors.

Doldam is a private rental residence in Mt. Seorak National Park, renowned for its fall foliage and boulder formations. The project applies 7 starter homes, grouped around a collective inner garden. The site is located on a corner plot in Bruges. The maximum building envelope steps down on the north side of the plot, in order to connect to the neighboring building, thereby maximizing daylight entering the collective garden (STEP 1).

On the south side, the building block is divided into 2 autonomous volumes that open, on the one hand, to communal parking, on the other hand, to the bicycle shed and collective garden (STEP 2).

Both volumes have sloping roofs and vertical incisions, describing 7 terraced houses for starters, young couples, and singles (STEP 3). The project attempts in various ways to update the typology of the traditional beguinage with small-scale houses, grouped around a collective garden.

Faced with this single-family country house's extensive program, we divided the main spaces into eleven volumes, arranging them irregularly in a lot with a large flat area. We proposed eight volumes on one level and three on two levels, which adapt to the topography and allow direct access through the hall and secondary access through the kitchen. And although their rotation is erratic, they are all located along a circulation that moves in an east-west direction, leaving the rooms and the dining room facing south and the service spaces facing north. As in a roll of the dice, the position of each volume in the house is random but follows precise rules. Forest Villa is located on the outskirts of Hefei, near the Dashu Mountain National Forest Park. Its natural topography is as picturesque as a fairyland on earth, which prompted HAS Design and Research to create a unique space that coexists with eternity and spirituality. Hung And Songkittipakdee (HAS) proposed a new design strategy that not only improved the functional spaces but also enhanced the site characteristics through three elements, shell, hole, and void, for a sense of extraordinary living experience in the Forest Villa.

On the building's facade, the design uses a sequence of shells to frame the continuous view. These shells strengthen the relationship between the interior and exterior, just like the traditional Chinese gardens, creating rich light and shadow effects and blocking excessive Western sunlight for indoor spaces. We undertook the architecture and interior design of the full refurbishment of this brick Listed townhouse in Windsor adding a glass infill extension to the rear and serene finishes throughout. Brightening up the interior spaces of the house with a frameless glass infill extension gave the family of four an opportunity for a more flexible kitchen and dining room and link to the outdoor terrace. Discrete minimal detailing curved off ceilings and a concrete floor present a distinct contrast to the more formal and traditional parts of the house and a welcoming space for contemporary living.

The layout of the light and bright kitchen arrangement was naturally determined by the Grade II Listed oak roof trusses now exposed having raised the ceiling for additional height. The German School in Madrid, founded in 1896, is among the oldest and, with 1,800 students, one of the largest German international schools, and it is a central place of cultural exchange in the city. At its new location in the north of Madrid, different usages have been designated to separate structures, which merge together into one ensemble under the perforated roof construction of the foyer spaces. The three main buildings – a kindergarten, a primary school and a secondary school – each surround their own interior courtyard and look out onto the snow-capped peaks of the Sierras. The purpose of the conversion of Chemnitz Central Station was to incorporate local and regional transportation under one roof and redefine the train station as gateway to the city and central hub within the urban setting. The existing station concourse from the 1970s was stripped down to its supporting structure, while its lower section was opened up toward the city. In the upper section, the façade was clad with staggered matted pneumatic pillow elements; the corner façade, highly visible in the city, is artistically enhanced with animated light patterns. This new “urban canopy” creates a fluid public space that extends out of the building and into the surrounding urban space, thus connecting the railway station with its larger urban context. Wilmina offers three new spaces at one unique location. On Kantstraße 79 in Berlin Charlottenburg, a listed ensemble consisting of a former courthouse and a women’s prison was transformed, expanded and reprogrammed by Grüntuch Ernst Architekten. Under family-run management, the former courthouse came to life as a space for art and culture – Amtsalon. Our residential project on Jinx Ave is in Austin, Texas. The original dwelling of 2000ft2, was constructed in 2013. Faced with the expansion of the homeowner's family, they started a search for a larger home. However, given the high demand in Austin's real estate market in 2020 and after exploring various options in the city, the homeowners opted to work with their existing property.

The undertaking involved a comprehensive renovation of the original home and the addition of a 1000ft2 extension. Through meticulous and purposeful space planning, the residence transformed from a 3-bedroom, 2.5-bathroom configuration to an expansive 5-bedroom, 4.5-bathroom layout. Additionally, the revamped space now features an office, living room, separate family room, and a pool, offering abundant room for the family's growth.

This was a new-construction build, with all white walls and builder-grade finishes. Also, the location was prime, the house needed to be made into a home for entertaining and hosting for our jet-setting client.

One significant challenge on this job was a roof leak. We noticed after we had the third floor bedrooms painted that there were brown streaks running down the walls.

This new construction home was a blank slate. With plain walls and builder-grade finishes, our client came to us with the hopes of injecting fun and personality to make it a special retreat for their trips to Charlottesville.

We used lots of fun and creative lighting with custom lighting layouts which we designed, designer wallpapers, plus burl wood accents to bring some adventure into an otherwise plain interior envelope.

The project by Studio Marco Piva, the hotel MGallery Palazzo Tirso, Accor chain, is a redevelopment project transforming the intended use of the historical 1920s building, the former headquarters of the Società Elettrica Sarda S.E.S.
